MOORHEAD, Minn. (Valley News Live) – The Ramsey County Medical Examiner’s Office has identified the two men who died during a Moorhead shooting on Monday, August 11th.
According to the medical examiner, the two men have been identified as 42-year-old Nathan Heiberg of Moorhead, MN, and 41-year-old Lucas Heiberg of Grand Forks, ND.
The BCA has also identified the three Fargo Police Officers who used force during the incident. All three are also members of the Red River Valley SWAT Team and have been placed on critical incident leave.
- Sgt. Michael Anderson used his department-issued firearm. He has 10 years of prior law enforcement experience.
- Sgt. Kyle Seehusen used his department-issued firearm. He has 12 years of prior law enforcement experience.
- Officer Tyler Seehusen used his department-issued firearm and has eight years of prior law enforcement experience.
According to the BCA’s preliminary investigation, Moorhead Police were called at 8:48 p.m. for a report of a domestic assault and order for protection violation on the 2400 block of 3rd Avenue North.
According to the adult female victim, she said she was physically assaulted by two males who have now been identified as Nathan and Lucas Heiberg. She also said she had two children, a 5 and a 6-year-old, inside the apartment.
Officers went to the apartment and attempted to talk to the two men. While Officers were positioned in the hallway, they used force to open the door and discharged a firearm inside the residence.
Officers backed away as they called for additional help and began to evacuate nearby apartments. At some point, SWAT Officers entered the apartment, and shots were fired. Nathan and Lucas died from their injuries. Lucas died at the scene, and Nathan died after arriving at the hospital.
The children were uninjured. Two firearms were recovered from the crime scene by the BCA. Portions of the incident were recorded on body-worn cameras.
The Moorhead Police Department has asked the BCA to investigate.
Once the investigation is done, the BCA will present its findings without recommendation to the Clay County Attorney’s Office for review.
