Becker announces bid for North Dakota Legislature

Former North Dakota State Senator Rick Becker talks to Flag Family News reporter Chris Larson

BISMARCK, ND – Former North Dakota State Senator Rick Becker isn’t done with politics.

After losing the U.S. House race to Julie Fedorchak last year, he announced Monday night that he’s running for a spot in his former political ring – the North Dakota State Legislature.

“I’m putting my hat in the ring for state legislature,” Becker told Flag Family News reporter Chris Larson on Monday night. “I think there’s still a lot of stuff that can be done to help the state of North Dakota.”

While he’s not sure which body of the Legislature he’s going to run in, he knows it’ll be in District 7. Currently representing the district are Reps. Jason Dockter and Matthew Heilman, along with Sen. Michelle Axtman.

“I’m going to be talking to the Executive Committee of District 7 to see about which of the legislators are going to remain running as incumbents and which are not, and where I might best fit to help the district out,” Becker said.

He said that the big picture is ‘becoming more and more clear that the cure is not going to come from Washington, D.C.”

“They seem, regardless of who’s in charge, they seem to be bound and determined to take us over a cliff,” Becker said. “And so I think that that has created a situation in which it’s critically important that states individually and working together shore things up and make sure that we’re secure financially and otherwise.”

Becker’s message to District 7 voters is not changing.

“It’s very important to get people in that are principled, who are principled and who will stand by those principles and who care much more about doing the right thing than they care about being reelected,” he said.
