Big Brothers Big Sisters urgently seeking mentors in F-M Area

FARGO, N.D. (Valley News Live) – The Village Family Service Center’s Big Brothers Big Sisters (BBBS) program is sounding the alarm: Currently, 84 local youth are waiting to be matched with a caring adult mentor, and 10 are ready to be matched today.

BBBS Community-Based mentoring provides a flexible way for volunteers to make a meaningful impact.

Bigs spend time with their Littles two to three times a month doing everyday activities like going to the park, attending community events, or just hanging out over a board game or shared hobby. It’s a small-time commitment that makes a big difference.

“Every child deserves someone in their corner,” said Susan Smith, Program Director of Big Brothers Big Sisters at The Village. “We have so many incredible youths who are simply waiting for someone to show up, listen, and believe in them. If you’ve ever thought about becoming a mentor, now is the time.”

To become a Big Brother or Big Sister, volunteers must be 18 or older and live in the Fargo-Moorhead area. Volunteers must have lived in the area for at least a year, be able to commit to a one-year match, and have access to reliable transportation.

Background checks, references, and training are all part of the enrollment process to ensure safe, supported, and successful matches.

Big Sister Andrea shared, “I was fortunate enough to grow up with many role models in my life that got me to where I am now; and I want to make sure my Little Sister gets the same opportunity!”

For youth on the waiting list, a mentor could be life changing. Research shows that mentored youth are more likely to succeed in school, avoid risky behaviors, and have stronger relationships.
