FARGO, N.D. – The Prairie Winds Veterinary Center is alerting the public about confirmed cases of canine parvovirus recently found in three litters of puppies, a juvenile dog and a single household puppy in Fargo-Moorhead.
Of the 21 puppies treated with monoclonal antibodies, center staff say 19 have recovered.
Veterinarians say parvovirus is highly contagious and often fatal if not treated quickly. The virus can cause intense gastrointestinal issues leading to vomiting, diarrhea, and dehydration in puppies and unvaccinated dogs. Parvovirus can also impact a dog’s immune system and heart muscle.
Prairie Winds Veterinary Center staff want all dogs to be vaccinated against the virus, because treatment can be costly and there may be long-lasting effects on a pet’s health even after they recover.
