Cass County Sheriff’s Office pursuing those with warrants and not arrested

FARGO, N.D. (Valley News Live) – The Cass County Sheriff’s Office has been cracking down on people with outstanding warrants.

The department put out a Facebook post back in late July, saying they are actively trying to arrest more people, adding, with their new jail pod, they have room to hold.

Sheriff Jahner of the Cass County Sheriff’s Office is addressing the issue of people with outstanding warrants.

“In the grand scheme of things, we had 2,025, so there’s still a lot of active misdemeanor arrest warrants out there,” said Jahner.

Jahner says that they’re being aggressive to get those people behind bars.

“What I mean by aggressive is we’re always looking for those people pretty regularly and utilizing whatever resources we have to locate that person. Especially if it has to do with public safety, if we think someone is in jeopardy or public safety is in jeopardy, we’re going to work those warrants very hard until we locate that person,” said Jahner.

In a July 31 Facebook post, the department wrote, “if you choose not to act, we will be coming to your residence or place of employment.”

“Ultimately, if these people don’t take care of it, we’re always going to go look for them, probably at their residence or different places first, but if we can’t find them, eventually we might end up at the business. So, we really want people to take care of it so that we don’t have to disrupt those things,” said Jahner.

Since the department’s message, Jahner says some people have turned themselves in, but many did not.

“The message wasn’t as successful as I was hoping that it would be; it was for the first couple of days. Our phones were pretty busy; people were calling in, but after a couple days, it really tapered off,” said Jahner.

With the new jail pod now partly open and plans to have it fully open by the end of September, they’ll finally have the space they need.

“The projection was for this thing to last for 10 years. We’re already a couple years into that. So, I’m hoping this will make it 10 years and we can provide the type of to ensure the safety of our community,” said Jahner.

Jahner says between his statement in late July and the beginning of September, there have been 14 bench warrants.

11 more warrants were referred by the Fargo Municipal Court after they contacted the Sheriff’s Office.
