Christkindlmarkt underway in Fargo

FARGO – An eight-year tradition is back in Fargo.

Christkindlmarkt marks the unofficial beginning of the holiday season in Fargo and is back this weekend at the Fargo Civic Center. The six-day event began Friday and featured a tree lighting.

Folkways, a non-profit dedicated to combating loneliness and isolation by creating community experiences, hosts the event, which is inspired by European markets and serves as an annual tradition in Fargo.

“When we started this event eight years ago, we were inspired by big cities,” Folkways co-founder Joe Burgum told WDAY Radio. “You look at Christkindlmarkts around the globe, and they’re in major metros, but tthey’re awesome traditions.”

The event is in its fifth year at the Fargo Civic Center. Prior to their time there, it was held at Drekker Brewing.

The event is held over two weekends and transforms nearly 65,000 square feet of event space – drawing nearly 15,000 over the six-day event.

The event runs today (Saturday) from noon until 9 p.m., and tomorrow from noon until 6 p.m. It’ll return next Friday and Saturday from noon until 9 p.m., and next Sunday from noon until 6 p.m.
