MOORHEAD, Minn. (Valley News Live) – Court documents obtained by Valley News Live have provided more details on what led to an alleged stabbing on September 2.
According to those court documents, police were called around 9:15 A.M. to 301 16th Street North in Moorhead for a reported stabbing. The caller said that Joshua Carney had stabbed him before running away from the scene. When officers arrived on scene, they found the victim holding a towel to his abdomen, along with a significant amount of blood.
The victim claimed Carney knocked on his door that morning and asked for a cup of sugar. He claims that before he could turn to get the sugar, Carney stabbed him with a knife that had a “reddish colored” handle. When he realized he had been stabbed, the victim slammed the door shut before Carney could enter the house.
Court documents say the victim and Carney were neighbors, and Carney had moved in about a year ago. The two had talked in the past, but the victim did now know why Carney would have stabbed him. The victim did reveal that he had talked to police a few days prior regarding a disturbance call in which Carney was listed as a suspect.
Carney was located near the Park Christian School in Moorhead and denied being in any altercation. He did make a comment that the officers “got here real quick”.
No knife was found on Carney.
The victim was admitted to the hospital for treatment and later told officers that he suffered a collapsed lung from the stabbing.
Carney is charged with one count of first-degree assault with great bodily harm and a count of second-degree assault with a dangerous weapon. Those charges carry a combined sentence of up to 27 years in prison and/or up to $44,000 in fines.
