Fargo, N.D. – While wanting everyone to enjoy Independence Day, the city of Fargo is reminding people about the existing law that forbids setting off fireworks within city limits.
Violators can be hit with a $100 fine, confiscation of fireworks and a mandatory court appearance.
“Everyone wants to celebrate…we all get that,” said Police Chief David Zibolski on The Flag this week. “But we really have to be careful in the cities because those [fireworks] can [set] houses on fire.”
Zibolski says a couple of residential fires during last year’s holiday weekend were linked to wayward fireworks.
“Sooner or later somebody blows a finger or a hand off, or a firework lands on someone’s roof,” said Zibolski.
And while potential violators will be on their radar, Zibolski noted his officers will have their hands full in general.
“Our staff will be out there working on those calls but they’re not going to be a top priority because we’ve got other things to do as well,” said Zibolski.
“We know it’s going to happen but we do our best to curb it.”
