Fargo residents speak out on city’s 2026 budget

FARGO – The Fargo City Commission held a public hearing on the City of Fargo’s budget.

The budget is balanced at roughly $140 million.

Two residents spoke with concerns to the budget as it is currently written.

“My main concern is that it goes after vulnerable populations and low-income people too much,” resident Christopher Coen said. “The biggest cut of all that I am concerned with is MATBUS.”

Currently, the budget cut impacts approximately 33 percent funding to MATBUS.

“We could wreck mass transit with that kind of cut,” Coen said.

He suggested alternate cuts, such as to funding for grants to groups such as TAP, the Downtown Community Partnership and the programs for indigenous peoples.

“I think there should be pain sharing,” Coen said.

Fargo resident Glen Knudson said that he’s concerned with the budget, as well.

“In examining the budget, there are some concerns that I have,” he said. “I don’t know how you’re going to address some of the concerns of the city with the budget.”

The City Commission took no action.

Final adoption of the 2026 budget is scheduled for September 29, 2025.
