North Dakota – As President Trump continues to tease the possibility of sending National Guard troops into other U.S. cities in the name of fighting crime, North Dakota Congresswoman Julie Fedorchak is hoping it’s a “wake up call” for leaders in those cities.
“We’ve become way too tolerant of crime,” Fedorchak told The Flag on Monday, who accused Democratic leaders of wanting to “embolden criminals and be soft on crime.”
Fedorchak was asked about the matter of Trump’s federalizing of police in Washington D.C., and whether or not he would need congressional approval to extend the National Guard presence there.
While it’s necessary to get U.S. lawmakers to approve his control of D.C. police beyond 30 days, it’s not needed for the National Guard.
Democratic leaders like D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser have pushed back on Trump’s assertion that crime there is on the rise.
Most recently, Trump has traded barbs with Maryland Governor Wes Moore, who is also criticizing the use of military reservists to control crime.
Trump, who also believes crime is out of control in Baltimore, has threatened to put troops that city.
On Sunday, Trump posted on Truth Social about possibly revoking funding for Maryland to rebuild the Francis Scott Key Bridge, which collapsed in 2024.
On the overall effort to fight crime, Fedorchak says the country “needs to get on top of this” and supports Trump’s “unwillingness to tolerate this nonsense any longer.”
“If D.C. were a state, it would have the highest murder rate in the country,” said Fedorchak.
“That’s not acceptable for any place, but it most certainly isn’t acceptable in our nation’s capital.”
“We need to get on top of this and I support President Trump’s unwillingness to tolerate this nonsense any longer and to stand up for law abiding citizens and for safety in our communities.”
