Finalists named for N.D. Board of Higher Education seat

BISMARCK, N.D. – A nominating committee recommends three names to fill a vacancy on the North Dakota Board of Higher Education.

Governor Kelly Armstrong will pick from:

  • Michelle Kommer, Fargo, a human resources and employee benefits consultant, who is a former state commerce and labor commissioner and director of Job Service North Dakota;
  • Stan Schauer, Bismarck, director of assessments, North Dakota Department of Public Instruction; and
  • Darin Scherr, Bismarck, business and operations manager for the Bismarck school district.

Armstrong’s choice will fill Levi Bachmeier’s term that ends June 30, 2029. He resigned his post after becoming North Dakota’s superintendent of public instruction in October 2025. Armstrong’s pick must be confirmed by the North Dakota Senate.

The Board of Higher Education oversees and sets policy for 11 colleges and universities in North Dakota’s university system.
