Fargo, N.D. – Many across the United States are preparing to recognize Flag Day, which falls on a Saturday this year.
June 14th commemorates the adoption of the U.S. flag by the Continental Congress in 1777.
In 1916, President Woodrow Wilson first declared June 14th as a national day of observance, and it became a national holiday years later in 1949.
Ahead of the national observance, Flag Family Media held a ‘Flag Day Party’ on Friday from 11am to 1pm in the company parking lot on Thunder Road South.

Deb Sagvold sang the National Anthem to kick off the event.
Jim Swartout, better known as ‘Jim the ND Flag Pole Guy, raised the U.S. flag during the anthem and was one of several event sponsors.
“What I celebrate the most is my heritage,” said Jim during an appearance on What’s On Your Mind? “I get to enjoy the spirit of that flag every day.”
After a special committee chose the flag’s design, it was first unfurled and flown heading into The Battle of Brandywine on September 11, 1777 during the American Revolutionary War.
“What did that flag mean to those people?”, asked Jim. “People had a symbol that they could coalesce around. They could all agree if we all unite under one flag, we will all look to civil order and the constitution [to guide us].”
On his website, Jim, who’s a former U.S. Marine, says he helped to install more than 100 flags last year.
“They see that flag going up and it’s so impressionable,” said Jim. “The flag goes up and they’re over there crying.”
Attendees were also treated to a chance to win gift card prizes.
