BISMARCK, N.D. – The United States and North Dakota flags will fly at full-staff throughout the state in observance of the inauguration of President-elect Donald Trump on Monday.
State officials say the order by Governor Kelly Armstrong will be in effect at the North Dakota Capitol and all state buildings only on January 20th.
“The inauguration of a U.S. president is a time to celebrate, and the Stars and Stripes should fly high as a symbol of freedom and democracy on such a momentous day for our nation. We will continue to honor the life and legacy of President Carter, as we should, by returning flags to half-staff on Jan. 21 as a mark of respect and reverence,” Armstrong said in a statement.
On December 29th, the day Carter died, Armstrong ordered U.S. and North Dakota flags to be flown at half-staff for 30 days in the state to honor the former president.
Trump said earlier this month on Truth Social that Democrats are “giddy” flags would be half mast during his inauguration and no American is happy about it.
“It should come as no surprise, but it is enormously disappointing that our Governor feels the need to cradle Trump’s fragile ego by dismissing the time honored etiquette of maintaining the flag at half-staff for 30 days upon the death of a president,” North Dakota Democratic-Nonpartisan League Party Executive Director Cheryl Biller said.
