Former Hankinson teacher charged with felonies, accused of sending messages to a student

WAHPETON, N.D. – A former Hankinson High School science teacher is charged with two felonies: luring a minor by computer and possession of certain materials prohibited.

With the luring charge, court documents say Zachary Nelson believed his alleged victims were between the ages of 15 and 17-years-old.

North Dakota law states a person convicted of luring a minor by computer discusses or depicts actual or simulated nudity, sexual acts, sexual contact, sadomasochistic abuse, or other sexual performances using an electronic device with a child. State law also states someone convicted of possession of certain materials prohibited knowingly had a video, picture or “other visual representation” that includes sexual conduct by a minor.

In March, Hankinson Public Schools posted on Facebook Zachary Nelson resigned and Richland County Sheriff Gary Ruhl confirmed with Flag Family News an investigation into him for messages he allegedly exchanged with a student was underway.

Nelson’s initial court appearance is scheduled for Monday.
