“Give us a little time”: Fargo mayor on vehicle noise pollution crackdown as summer approaches

Fargo, N.D. – As the unofficial start of summer gets underway, the mayor of Fargo is asking for the public’s patience when it comes to cracking down on loud noise pollution from mufflers and motorcycles.

Mayor Tim Mahoney says the police department has a specific group dedicated to traffic control, which he says they’re taking “very seriously.”

“You’ll see a a step up in a lot of enforcement and officers in zones and areas where this [noise problem] is going on,” said Mahoney on The Flag’s What’s On Your Mind?

The discussion began after a texter to the radio program said there are continued issues in south Fargo.

Last year, Mahoney says the city had “a lot of arrests and tickets handed out” concerning noise pollution and saw a “discernable change in that behavior.”

But Mahoney said that won’t happen right away this year.

“Give us a little time here to get our teams up and running to work on that,” said Mahoney.  “You and I can talk about it in a month.”

Mahoney also says a new state law will help with enforcement, by allowing police to circle back to offenders through their vehicle registration even if the driver isn’t initially pulled over.
