Higher Ed Board considering candidates for NDSU presidency

FARGO, N.D. – The North Dakota State Board of Higher Education has begun its deliberations as to whom will become the next President at North Dakota State University.

The three finalists – Kansas State’s Dr. Marshall Stewart, University of Tennessee’s Dr. Bernie Savarese and Utah State’s Dr. Alan Smith – all interviewed with the State Board of Higher Ed Monday morning.

“It’s an extraordinary opportunity,” Stewart said.

If selected, he has high aspirations for the University.

“I think you can get 15,000 on campus,” Stewart said.

As a university administrator, he wants the college ‘to be known to get students involved early.’

Savarese said he is impressed with the University. His focus on student success begins with access and affordability.

“Students want universities who work for them,” Savarese said.

Smith said he sees a lot of great things happening.

“I see momentum and strong positioning,” he said. “I see mission, momentum and, in that, opportunity.”

The Board of Higher Education will select the new president this afternoon. The new leader will take office this summer.
