Hillsboro voters approve school’s 12-mill increase

Interview with Superintendent of Hillsboro Public Schools Jon Dryburgh

(HILLSBORO, ND) – Voters in the Hillsboro Public School District have overwhelmingly supported a 12-mill increase.

Superintendent Jon Dryburgh says 479 voters turned out for the special election, with 328 voting for the increase – or 68.5 percent. He says 55 percent was needed to pass the measure.

The mill levy increase would add tax revenue each year for the next 10 years — at a rate of about $300,000.

“Some people might start feeling the impacts of it right away,” Dryburgh said.

He said the idea of the increase wasn’t to increase spending or reverse cuts, but to address the carryover.

“Our carryover this June is down to about $325,000,” Dryburgh said.

At that carryover amount, there likely wouldn’t be enough reserve available to do some repair projects that aren’t covered by insurance.

“That’s the purpose, to build up our carryover,” Dryburgh said.

The increase takes effect next year.
