Hoeven seeks prioritizing U.S. ag sales in trade talks, pressure on Canada over wildfire smoke

Washington, D.C. – North Dakota Senator John Hoeven is wanting the U.S. to ensure foreign countries are agreeing to purchase American agriculture products during trade talks, and also wants Canada to do more about containing wildfire smoke.

Hoeven, who chairs the Senate Agriculture Appropriations Committee and is a senior member of the Senate Agriculture Committee, recently spoke to Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer.

“I emphasized that we need to get ag sales going as soon as we can:  soybeans, corn, wheat and our other ag products,” said Hoeven.

And in trade talks with Canada, the Republican is also wanting both men to put more pressure on that country to address their wildfires and the constant smoke that has drifted into the state this summer.

“North Dakotans have real concerns with Canada ‘exporting smoke’ and reduced air quality, which has not only impeded summer activities, but is a serious health concern,” Hoeven said in a statement.
