Fargo, N.D. – As the cleanup continues from last Friday’s severe weather, many homeowners are taking a second look at their insurance policies and the extent of their coverage.
“The amount of contacts we were getting in the middle of the night when the storm was coming from customers [to make policy changes] was too late,” said DJ Colter with American Family Insurance on The Flag’s What’s On Your Mind? “That’s just not how it works.”
Colter, whose company is an advertiser with Flag Family Media, is recommending policy holders with any insurance firm should revisit their coverage.
While admitting storms like these often don’t blow through the Fargo-Moorhead area, Colter says home insurance policies have changes over the past 5 to 10 years.

“The hardest part with a storm like this…is trees falling and just that cleanup part,” said Colter.
“Most companies have tree removal built in to their home policies but there’s a limit per tree, or limit overall after so many [downed] trees cleared.”
But Colter says whatever damage caused by fallen trees is typically covered by a liability policy.
That said, Colter says policy holders should analyze their insurance to see what might be lacking but it’s a customer’s decision on what should be added.
“That’s always what keeps me up at night as an agency owner,” said Colter. “I never want [a client] not insured properly.”
