FARGO, N.D. – At a press conference Tuesday, the Chairman of the Fargo Human Rights Commission called out city leaders
“The City of Fargo leadership refuses to stand with their Somali residents,” Sekou Sirleaf said.
He called the inactions ‘wrong’ and ‘heartless.’
The comments come as Somalis are being targeted across the country.
“We are deeply concerned by the recent dehumanization and inflammatory remarks made by President Donald Trump about the Somali community in neighboring Minnesota,” Vice Chair Nancy Boyle said.
Sirleaf also called out Mayor Tim Mahoney and other leaders, calling them ‘cowards.’
“That’s unfortunate,” Mahoney said. “I think I’ve been unwavering in my support of this community. You’ve seen me at every major event that has gone on.
Our partners at Valley News Live say more than 4,000 Somalis call Fargo home.
