If you drive dangerously during winter weather, you can get ticketed

Listen: North Dakota Highway Patrol Captain Bryan Niewind’s conversation with The Flag’s Scott Hennen

NORTH DAKOTA – North Dakota Highway Patrol Captain Bryan Niewind warns drivers can be ticketed if they don’t drive carefully during winter weather.

On The Flag, Niewind said drivers can be cited for care required if they don’t drive responsibly for the conditions they’re in or taking traffic around them into consideration. They can also be ticketed for careless driving if they’re speeding during snowy conditions or weaving in and out of lanes.

People can also be arrested for reckless driving if they’re taking evasive action or causing other vehicles to get into crashes.

“We’re responding to call to call to call with cars spinning out, going into the ditch, getting involved in crashes, so there’s not a lot of opportunity to make traffic stops. When we do see those dangerous driving behaviors, we will make a habit of trying to get those things stopped if we can safely do it,” Niewind explained.

Troopers can help drivers get their vehicle out of ditches with a push from their squad car or help them find a tow truck. If you need help, call them at 701-328-2447.
