Judge sentences Grand Forks man to 10 years in connection with January shooting

GRAND FORKS, N.D. – A Grand Forks man will spend 10 years in jail after being sentenced earlier this week in connection with a shooting outside a Grand Forks hotel.

Judge Theodore Sandberg handed down the sentence to Mason Allery on Monday.

Court documents say on January 3, 2025, at 10:35 p.m., Grand Forks Police responded to 1211 N, 47th Street, #205 for a suspicious activity call. Upon arrival, police spoke with the victim who said Allery showed her a handgun in the room of the hotel, and proved it was real by taking out several bullets.

According to documents, 20 minutes after the initial suspicious activity call, police were called to 1000 N, 42nd Street for reports of gunshots.

Upon arrival, officers were able to locate Allery and Walker Poitra. Both were apprehended.

Poitra is set to be sentenced April 6.
