FARGO, ND – The City of Fargo’s new fire chief is no stranger to the department.
“This is an opportunity for our fire department to welcome back one of our own who started here, grew here, and received the opportunity to provide leadership as a fire chief in another agency,” Fargo Mayor Dr. Timothy Mahoney said at Monday night’s Fargo City Commission meeting.
Gary Lorenz, who was installed as the fire department’s new leader Monday night, comes to Fargo from Grand Forks, where he served the last seven years as fire chief of their city’s fire department.
“Grand Forks was great to me. They’ve got great people. We created a great department up there,” he said.
Prior to his stint with Grand Forks, Lorenz served more than 20 years with the Fargo Fire Department.
“The city has grown a lot, the department has grown a lot and I look forward to being a part of the continued growth of this organization and more importantly, being part of the team,” he said. “There’s nothing I can do alone. It takes every member of the organization from the ground up.”
Lorenz said he’s looking forward to continuing to provide the high level of service to the community that the Fargo Fire Department is known for.
“It’s what is expected of us,” he said. “It’s what our mission is, as partially of what that oath read and I look very much forward to working with the men and women of our department to meeting that mission.”
Lorenz takes over for Steve Dirksen, who retired earlier this year.
