Man charged after allegedly punching someone at random in downtown Fargo

FARGO, N.D. (Valley News Live) – A Fargo man is facing assault charges for allegedly punching someone in an unprovoked attack on Broadway on August 4.

According to court documents obtained by Valley News Live, the victim told police he was walking in the 15 block of Broadway around 10:30 P.M. when an unknown man suddenly hit him.

Video surveillance shows the man approaching the victim near the train tracks and punching him, causing the victim to fall into the bushes. The man is then seen punching the victim again before getting on his bicycle and riding away.

The victim suffered gashes to his forehead and the back of his head. He was admitted to the hospital for his injuries and required surgery to fix multiple broken bones in his face, according to court documents.

Officers reviewed video footage and officers noted that the suspect was likely Royal Rockefeller.

Rockefeller called dispatch on August 5, reporting that there were hidden cameras in the Island Park bathrooms. Officers met with him and determined that there were no cameras in the bathrooms. Rockefeller mentioned to the officers several times that he was “in psychosis” in relation to ongoing mental health issues.

A review of the video footage from the assault confirmed that Rockefeller matched the description of that suspect. In fact, they say he was wearing the same clothes and was in possession of the bicycle seen in the video.

Rockefeller was arrested and is now charged with aggravated assault. Rockefeller is the same man charged with terrorizing in a February 2025 incident. The terrorizing charge was dismissed after he put in a guilty plea on July 15 and that case closed as a misdemeanor.
