WAHPETON, N.D. (Valley News Live) – According to prosecutors, the man convicted of killing 20-year-old Bailey Bernstein is up for parole in August.
Chad Olson was sentenced in October of 2024 after pleading guilty to criminal vehicular homicide and duty in an accident involving death.
He was sentenced to 10 years on each count, which are being served concurrently
He was ordered to serve 5 years, with the other 5 years being suspended. Because of credit for 342 days already served before his sentencing, he was only ordered to spend 4 years behind bars.
Upon release, Olson will serve 3 years of supervised probation. That includes no alcohol and no contact with the Bernstein family.
In addition, he will need to do chemical dependency evaluations and be a part of a 24/7 sobriety program for the first 18 months out of custody. All fines and fees have been waived except for $10,000 in restitution.
20-year-old Bailey Bernstein was killed on October 12, 2023, when she was out on a walk with her mother in the 400 block of 11th Avenue South. According to officials, they were walking along the south shoulder of the road when a pickup driven by Olson hit Bernstein before driving off.
It took investigators three hours to locate Olson following the crash.
