Man dies from self-inflicted gunshot wound after crews battle house fire early Tuesday morning

FARGO – An overnight fire call led to the discovery of a man with a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

The call came in for a structure fire in the 400 block of 21st Street South at around 2:30 a.m. The location is west of Jefferson Elementary School.

Upon arrival, fire crews found the house on fire and worked to extinguish it before beginning a search of the interior of the home. The interior search yielded no persons inside the structure.

At the same time, Fargo Police officers responded to check the detached garage on the property, where they located a man with a self-inflicted gunshot wound. A firearm was laying on the ground next to the man.

First responders began life-saving measures and transported the man to a local hospital. He was later pronounced dead.

A joint investigation by Fargo Fire and Police determined the man, who has not yet been identified, was the homeowner and is believed to have been the one to ignite the fire.
