Mandan man charged in fatal hit-and-run in Barnes County

BARNES COUNTY, N.D. — A Mandan man faces felony level charges in Barnes County in connection with an accident that killed another person.

Garret Kuntz was charged Tuesday with two Class B felonies, one for duty in accident involving death or injury – death and another for manslaughter. He was not in custody as of Wednesday afternoon after an arrest warrant was issued earlier in the day.

The charges are in connection with a January incident that killed a man, identified as Jerson Mejia from Honduras.

According to our earlier reports, first responders received multiple 911 calls reporting a pedestrian walking along Interstate 94. Law enforcement made contact with the man and he declined assistance. Additional calls continued to be received throughout the evening, with the last report to dispatch occurring at approximately 10:55 p.m.

The next day, a passerby observed a body in the ditch and called 911.
