Meet Ernest, the Fargo Walmart worker gone viral

By Sydney Zatz

FARGO, N.D. (Valley News Live) – Many have spoken words of praise for one Fargo Walmart worker.

Over at the Walmart on 13th Avenue South in Fargo is one special worker, Ernest Mayhorn.  The 73-year-old has been working at the store for the last year and a half.

“All this is, is just interacting and socializing with people and just getting people to have a better perspective themselves, and you know, others. That’s it, it’s simple. Like I said, ‘I don’t know a better venue than this one.’ Can you think of one? No, you can’t,” said Mayhorn.

”He makes a purpose in everyone’s life. So, he’ll, at the end of the day, he makes everyone’s day. Even if they come in here crabby, they end up leaving happy,” said Maccie Baker, a Team Lead at the store.

Some might know him as the man who gives out candy and popcorn. If there’s one thing he’s at Walmart to do, it’s to inspire others.

“Everybody doesn’t come here for the same reason.  Everybody doesn’t come to shop, which is a good thing to do. But most people come in because they’re bored at home, they want to come to Walmart, and they just hope for the best. Know what? That’s what they get, they get me. I’m the best at trying to bring inspiration and keep people inspired.”

When asked how he feels to have gone viral, “It makes me feel that my purpose is being filled. That’s my purpose. I want people to know what love is. I really want people to know I really care. I want them to know that here in Walmart, we’re starting to develop that type of behavior.”

From helping with checking out, to a friend shoppers and workers can rely on.

“Oh, Ernest, Ernest. Ernest is a really good person. He’s here and helps us do shrinks. So, catches people who are not supposed to be doing what they’re doing. He makes a purpose towards everyone’s day,” added Baker.

If there’s one thing he does want to say, and to do, it’s to give back to customers.

“That’s my reward. I’m not looking for no cars, boats, airplanes. But you know what, that would be nice. But that’s not what I’m looking for. So every time I see a person, I try to enlighten them on something. I try to inspire them on something, or expand on whatever it is that they’re doing, to make it positive. That’s what we want.”

“I love you guys,” added Mayhorn.

“Have a blessed day.”
