Minnesota softball players sue over state’s transgender athlete policy

MINNESOTA – Several high school softball players are suing Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison in hopes of forcing him to remove transgender athletes from their sport.

Female Athletes United filed a federal lawsuit arguing allowing transgender athletes creates an unsafe environment. They also believe it sets up unfair competition for the Maple Grove and Farmington players. The suit focuses on an unnamed Champlin Park player plaintiffs allege was born male.

Ellison argues transgender athletes are allowed to compete in girls’ and women’s sports in Minnesota because the state’s constitution and Human Rights Act doesn’t allow for discrimination based on gender identity.

Attorney General Pam Bondi said she was looking into suing the state of Minnesota in April for defying an executive order signed by President Donald Trump banning transgender athletes from participating in girls’ and women’s sports.

“We don’t want to be suing people. We want them to comply with the law. We’ve given them opportunity over and over again. The Department of Education, HHS, they sat down with them in person, multiple meetings, and got nowhere,” Bondi said in a press conference.

The Department of Justice has sued Maine for allowing transgender athletes to participate in women’s sports. Bondi says she’s also looking into suing California.
