Moorhead Mayor Shelly Carlson considers campaigning for a State House Seat

MOORHEAD, Minn. – Moorhead Mayor Shelly Carlson is considering running for a Minnesota House seat.

According to the state’s Campaign Finance and Public Disclosure website, Carlson filed to register a campaign committee as a DFLer for District 4A which covers Moorhead and Oakport Township.

Carlson tells Flag Family News she plans to reach a decision on running in the next few weeks.

The seat is open in the 2026 election because DFL State Representative Heather Keeler announced a campaign for GOP Congresswoman Michelle Fischbach’s seat.

Carlson was appointed mayor by the City Council when Governor Tim Walz appointed Mayor Johnathan Judd as a judge in Minnesota’s 7th Judicial District in Fergus Falls. Carlson won her election in 2022.
