FARGO, N.D. (Valley News Live) – Cass County government workers completed training designed to help them survive active shooters and severe weather emergencies.

The active threat training course “Stop the Threat, Stop the Bleed” covers active shooter situations and severe weather response.

“To speak to weather conditions, obviously, as we all know, they can be very sporadic,” said Cass County Sheriff Jesse Jahner. “Really, our goal through adverse weather training is to make sure that all of our employees know how to respond if we should get short notice of adverse weather coming this way.”

The course is taught to Cass County employees every three years. Some employees have taken the course before, and others learned life-saving skills for the first time.’

Employees learned what to use to find cover, hide effectively, and use building exits safely.

“People getting out of the mindset that these things will never happen to you, whether it’s an active shooter or active weather,” said Cole Baker, Emergency Manager for Cass County. “So when the event actually does happen, you automatically snap in and you know what to do instead of freezing.”

The sheriff’s office and emergency management held eight training sessions. Over 200 employees benefited from the training.

“As public employees, government employees, we absolutely have to be prepared to know what to do,” said Robert Wilson, Cass County Administrator.
