MSUM becomes target of federal civil rights lawsuit alleging violations of Title IV

MOORHEAD, MN — A national law firm is taking a look at Minnesota State University Moorhead, alleging several scholarships offered by the institution violate Title IV and federal law.

The suit was filed against MSUM by the Equal Protection Project. The group alleges five university scholarships are restricted to students specifically based on race, color, or national origin. The complaint issued by the Equal Protection Project alleges the challenged MSUM scholarships specifically create a systemic discrimination problem at the university.

‘EPP believes that these scholarships violate Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 (“Title VI”) and its implementing regulations, and, because MSUM is a public institution, these discriminatory scholarships also violate the Equal Protection Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment of the U.S. Constitution,” wrote the EPP in a statement upon filing the suit.

WDAY Radio has reached out to MSUM for comment, and will include any response if one is received.
