LISTEN: Levi Bachmeier’s conversation with Tim Flakoll
NORTH DAKOTA – The North Dakota Senate voted against a bill that would have funded school meals during its special session last month.
On The Flag, State Superintendent of Public Instruction Levi Bachmeier said if that would have passed, that wouldn’t have led to less education funding in the state.
Bachmeier says in 2019 30% of North Dakota’s budget went to school districts. Now it’s at 25%.
“I hear people say ‘If the meals pass, that means we’re going to have to cut educational funding. I think that’s a false tradeoff. I want to have a conversation with legislators about what’s happened that’s caused us to deprioritize investing in schools,” Bachmeier said.
