ND Farmers Union head decides not to seek reelection

(NORTH DAKOTA) – The president of the North Dakota Farmers Union is deciding to step away from the top leadership post after more than a decade of service in that role.

The union says Mark Watne will not seek reelection for a thirteen term as president.

Watne was first elected back in 2013, and has also led the Farmers Union Insurance and Farmers Union Service Association.

“I am convinced that strong leaders must develop new leaders of future generations for the longevity of an organization to succeed,” Watne said in a written statement through the union.  “It is time to let a new generation of capable people step forward and lead us into the future of agriculture and the success of family farms and ranches.”

Over the course of his 26 years with the union, Watne has also held roles ranging from county president, to state board members and staff executive director.
