BARNES COUNTY, N.D. (Valley News Live) – A Barnes County man was arrested after reportedly threatening to “put a bullet” in a man’s face.
According to court documents, law enforcement was called to the scene in Oriska, North Dakota after a woman called police, saying that a man had threatened to shoot her ex-husband in the face.
When they arrived on scene, the caller said it all started when she asked the suspect, later identified as William Smith, if he was on drugs.
The caller alleges Smith blew up at her, and pointed at a chip in her windshield that she says was a result of him throwing something, believed to be a wedding ring, at the car.
She also claims Smith put a garage shelf behind her car to prevent her from leaving, and reached into the vehicle, pulled out the key from the ignition, and threw it.
The caller told police Smith repeatedly threatened to shoot her ex husband in the head.
The victim’s ex husband arrived on scene and said he wanted to press charges after being told about the threats allegedly made by Smith.
During the investigation, the officers were told that Smith had been pulled over by Valley City Police and was in custody. According to court documents, Smith was arrested for DUI.
Authorities searched the vehicle smith was driving and noted the odor of alcohol and marijuana inside.
They found a 64 ounce flask in the vehicle that they said smelled like alcohol inside and also found a container in the center console which they said contained less than half an ounce of a leafy green substance.
They also found drug paraphernalia that they say is used to smoke marijuana.
Court documents say they attempted to speak with Smith at the Barnes County Corrections Center, but he wasn’t fully cooperative. He says he was assaulted by the woman who called and that he had injuries from her.
He also admitted to grabbing the keys but denied threatening to shoot the ex husband, instead saying that he threatened to punch him in the face.
When they asked him about the open container and marijuana in the car, they say Smith became upset and told the officer to get out of his cell.
Smith is facing multiple charges, including terrorizing, felonious restraint, theft, two APC charges, possession of marijuana, and possession of drug paraphernalia.
