FARGO, N.D. (Valley News Live) – A Fargo city commissioner is demanding answers about a needle distribution program that she says has provided nearly one million needles to residents over the past two years.

Commissioner Michelle Turnberg posted on social media Wednesday that the city distributed “almost 1 MILLION needles” in 2024 and so far in 2025, raising questions about funding sources and program oversight.

“Where is the money coming from, what is being given out and who is paying for it?” Turnberg wrote in the post, which included images of discarded needles and what appeared to be budget documents for Fargo Cass Public Health’s Harm Reduction Division.

Turnberg said she has been told to “stay in my lane” regarding her inquiries into the program but vowed to continue seeking information.

“Fargo residents deserve answers and I will keep fighting to uncover the truth,” she wrote.

Officials from the Harm Reduction Center also distribute mouth guards and antiseptic wipes to reduce the spread of HIV, hepatitis, and other diseases.

The program began as a traditional needle exchange in 2018.
