New North Dakota laws go into effect August 1

BISMARCK, ND – Several laws passed by North Dakota’s Legislature go into effect Friday.

One of the most talked-about bills from the legislature increases the state’s property tax credit from $500 per year to $1,500 a year.

One of them bans the use of cell phones in schools. The ban is a part of House Bill 1160, which requires students to not use their cell phones throughout the school day between the first bell of the day and the last bill of the day.

North Dakota’s speed limits on interstates are also increasing. Beginning Friday, the speed limit on I-29 and I-94 increases from 75 miles per hour to 80 miles per hour.

A third bill that goes into effect relates to commercial entities publishing or distributing sexual material deemed ‘harmful to minors.’ The entities will now be required to verify the age of anyone who attempts to access the content.

Also, beginning Friday, you’ll now hear something called a Feather Alert. According to ND Response, the Feather Alert is an urgent message to the public to help locate an indigenous individual who has been abducted or is believed to be at imminent risk of serious bodily injury or death.
