NORTH DAKOTA – Nineteen of the 20 Republican legislative candidates North Dakota Governor Kelly Armstrong endorsed won their primary elections.
The only one that lost was State Representative Dustin McNally in Grand Forks who was beaten by Connie Osowski by 17 votes.
Among legislators who lost their primaries were Republican State Representative Jeff Hoverson of Minot and GOP State Representative Bill Tveit of Hazen.
Tveit was a lead sponsor of a bill Armstrong vetoed that would have made librarians eligible to be arrested if books deemed obscene were available.
Hoverson was the lead sponsor of a resolution urging the Supreme Court to overturn the legality of gay marriage.
Republican State Representative Mike Nathe of Bismarck said on The Flag that voters have shown they want the legislature to work on things North Dakotans are worried about instead of social issues.
“When the battles were going on about ‘We’re endorsed and you’re going against the will of the people.’ The will of the people in that district was 35 angry people who endorsed somebody. That’s not the will of the people. The will of the people is when you have 16,700 people in their district and they get an opportunity to vote,” Nathe said.
