North Dakota to now offer a mobile ID option

FARGO, N.D. (Valley News Live) – As technology changes, so has the way you can now present your North Dakota license.

The new mobile option for a North Dakota ID will be just like your credit card, accessible through your mobile wallet.

“We are recommending that you still carry your physical card. Because there will be places in North Dakota that are not accepting it yet. So law enforcement is currently not accepting it because we have to really build that out with them,” said Brad Schaffer with the NDDOT Driver License Division.

You can use the mobile ID at five airports in the state, including Fargo and Grand Forks. Just keep in mind that doesn’t mean you can use it to come home.

“Go to any one of those airports, and you have a mobile driver’s license, and you can use that to go through the TSA checkpoint. It’s very quick, it’s very convenient. I would just please make sure you check where you’re going, cause that other airport may not.”

That’s the thing Schaffer keeps encouraging others to do, bring your physical card with you. There’s going to be a big transition period.

“This is how we’re going to convey our identity. It is more secure because you actually control what information is shared, versus an actual physical card. Because if you hand that over to somebody, they see everything.”

Mobile IDs are available for Apple, Google, and Samsung Wallets. It’s optional and costs only $5 each renewal period.

Those at the DOT say over 700 North Dakotans have already signed up.
