Northbound driving lane of I-29 opening to traffic Wednesday morning

FARGO, N.D. (Valley News Live) – Drivers who travel north of Fargo via Interstate 29 will see a change to the landscape beginning Wednesday, September 10.

Red River Valley Alliance and ASN Constructors along with the North Dakota Department of Transportation are announcing the opening of the I-29 northbound driving lane on the new permanent alignment.

The northbound driving lane near mile marker 76 will move from the existing bypass lane to the new crossing the morning of Wednesday, September 10.

The northbound passing lane is anticipated to move to the new alignment at the end of the month.

The southbound passing lane will close on September 9, and is anticipated to reopen at the end of the month moving traffic to that new alignment.

“You know just getting the stormwater diversion channel built which is part of the comprehensive FM Area Diversion project, and bringing permanent reliable flood protection to the community is a huge factor of what we’re doing. it’s really kind of the ‘why’ we’re here doing this is to really bring that permanent flood protection,” said Tara Ekren, the Public Information Officer of Red River Valley Alliance.

The southbound driving lane is anticipated to move to the new crossing mid-October.

“Opening interstate crossings to traffic is an exciting milestone in the construction of the stormwater diversion channel,” shared Luke Chenery, RRVA CEO. “As construction on the channel continues, these milestones mark progress, although more importantly, they bring us one step closer to the comprehensive FM Area Diversion project providing permanent, reliable flood protection for our communities.”

The construction of the new crossing has been closely monitored by the North Dakota Department of Transportation. “It’s rewarding to see this infrastructure come to life,” said Aaron Murra, NDDOT Fargo District Engineer. “These new crossings not only improve travel for motorists but play a key role in the long-term flood protection of the region. We’re proud to be part of a project that strengthens both our transportation system and the safety of our communities.”

RRVA, ASN Constructors and NDDOT thank motorists for their patience and cooperation during this important construction project.

Here are some fast facts about these crossings:

  • Each bridge measures 410.5 feet long
  • Each bridge uses 15 girders, which are 135 feet and 6 inches long, to create the primary support

Bridgework was completed by ASN Constructors and subcontractor Industrial Builders, Inc. Roadway work was completed by ASN Constructors and subcontractors Park Construction Company and All Finish Concrete.
