BROOKLYN PARK, Minn. – A possible break-in is being investigated at the home where Minnesota Speaker Emerita Melissa Hortman and her husband, Mark, were killed over the weekend.
Police say plywood used to cover up the home was ripped off and a window was broken for someone to get inside. Authorities say they don’t believe anything was missing and they are looking for a suspect.
Vance Boelter is accused of killing the Hortmans and shooting State Senator John Hoffman and his wife, Yvette, in their Champlin home in a politically-motivated attack.
Candlelight vigils organized by county DFL Party units in remembrance of the Hortmans are scheduled across Minnesota Wednesday night including:
- Moorhead – 8:30 at Viking Ship Park next to Hjemkomst Center
- Crookston – 5:00 to 7:00 vigil and picnic at Wildwood Park
- Alexandria – 8:00 at Big Ole Park
- Saint Paul – 8:00 to 9:30 at the State Capitol
You’re asked to bring your own candle, but not bring signs of any kind.
If you can’t attend, vigil organizers suggest lighting a candle at home, turning on your porchlight or stepping outside and enjoy the sunset in honor of the Hortmans.
