FALCON HEIGHTS, Minn. – Several state lawmakers are reportedly using private security details for extra protection while at the Minnesota State Fair.
In June, DFL State Representative and former Minnesota Speaker of the House Melissa Hortman and her husband, Mark, were shot and killed in their Brooklyn Park home. That same day, DFL State Senator John Hoffman and his wife, Yvette, were shot at their home in Champlin. They are recovering.
Vance Boelter faces state and federal charges in connection to the shootings.
Flag Family News reached out to several lawmakers about whether they’re attending, and if so, if private security has been hired.
“I may not make it down to the fair this year, but that’s not a reflection on personal safety,” Minnesota Senate Minority Leader Mark Johnson (R – East Grand Forks) wrote in a text to Flag Family News reporter Chris Larson. “The assassinations have really put safety at the forefront of a lot of folks’ minds this summer.”
DFL State Senator Rob Kupec of Moorhead shared he will be at the fair one day this year, including at the non-partisan State Senate booth in the Education building. He said he believes one State Trooper will also be there.
Flag Family News also reached out to Democratic Minnesota Senators Amy Klobuchar and Tina Smith and GOP Minnesota Congresswoman Michelle Fischbach to see if they will have security while possibly attending ‘The Great Minnesota Get Together’, but they didn’t immediately respond.
The state fair runs through September 1. Click here for more information.
