MINNEAPOLIS (Valley News Live) – A Red Lake mother accused of killing her two children and setting their house on fire was found guilty Wednesday in Minneapolis.
Jennifer Stately was charged after her two sons, 5-year-old Tristan and 6-year-old Remi, were stabbed to death on March 15, 2024. Stately also set the home on fire before fleeing with her 3-year-old son, prompting a statewide Amber Alert. Stately was arrested about three hours after the abduction and charged with child neglect after the son she was traveling with was found to be malnourished.
She was later charged with murder, arson and child neglect.
According to court documents, Stately slashed at her two children with a sharp object and then set fire to the home. One of the children died from the stabbing, and the other died from smoke inhalation from the fire, the charges say.
Stately’s attorney, Paul Engh, attempted an insanity defense, saying she thought the home was “demonic,” but the indictment argued that she “willfully and maliciously set fire” to the home in the Red Lake Indian Reservation.
