Rep. Fedorchak ready to work on changing the Department of Education

Scott Hennen’s interview with North Dakota Congresswoman Julie Fedorchak

WASHINGTON – North Dakota Congresswoman Julie Fedorchak says she supports how President Donald Trump has gone about trying to restructure the U.S. Department of Education.

Trump has asked Secretary of Education Linda McMahon to develop a plan to reduce the size of the department and dismantle it. Ending a federal department requires an act of Congress.

“The House is very ready to support President Trump in this initiative and all of his efforts to return more power to the people, to the states, to make government more responsive, more accountable, a better steward of taxpayer dollars,” Fedorchak explained.

Fedorchak mentioned calls to end the Department of Education have been around Capitol Hill for years. In his State of the Union speech in 1982, President Ronald Reagan called for the department to be dismantled.

“It just doesn’t make sense to collect money from taxpayers, have the federal bureaucrats take a chunk of it and then send it back to the states with strings attached. Let’s take out the middle man,” Fedorchak said.

House Democrats say getting rid of the Department of Education could impact students getting access to a quality education, federal grants and student loans.

Fedorchak also says she’s heard from farmers who are eager for a new farm bill. She adds she’s pressed the House Agriculture Committee and the Trump administration to finalize a deal.

Fedorchak says the bill could help mitigate short-term challenges of tariffs.
