LISTEN: Congresswoman Julie Fedorchak’s conversation with The Flag’s Scott Hennen
WASHINGTON – North Dakota Congresswoman Julie Fedorchak supports Speaker of the House Mike Johnson rejecting a Senate-passed bill to mostly fund the Department of Homeland Security during the agency’s shutdown.
The bill funded DHS, but didn’t have any funding for Border Patrol and Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
“We just aren’t willing to sacrifice that very strategic national security for our country and for those agencies and for the people that work there,” Fedorchak said on “What’s On Your Mind?” on The Flag.
In passing the One Big Beautiful Act last year, Congress gave ICE $75 million in funding which The CATO Institute reports is seven times the agency’s annual budget over the previous year.
Democrats have opposed funding DHS because they want to see reforms to ICE following federal agents shooting and killing Renee Good and Alex Pretti in Minneapolis.
President Donald Trump signed an executive order to pay Transportation Security Agency employees who worked without a paycheck for a month.
The House passed a continuing resolution to fund DHS for 60 days.
Fedorchak says this isn’t a fight between Republicans. She places blame on Democrats refusing to support funding for vital Homeland Security efforts.
The House is on recess for two weeks. Fedorchak said that shouldn’t have happened without a deal to end the partial government shutdown.
