Sen. Cramer says James Comey ‘should be indicted’ but could have political impact on GOP if not done ‘in a smart way’

WASHINGTON, D.C. – North Dakota Senator Kevin Cramer is supporting the Department of Justice’s decision to indict former FBI Director James Comey, but did express some concern about the possible political ramifications down the road.

Comey was indicted on Thursday on accusations he lied under oath before Congress about leaking information to the press about ongoing investigations related to the 2016 presidential election.

“Nothing that’s happening to James Comey is anything he didn’t earn and deserve,” Cramer told The Flag’s What’s On Your Mind? on Friday.

“You don’t just get off the hook just because you were a public official.”

Cramer was then asked about worries that the move could hurt Republicans in next year’s midterm elections, which could eventually lead to the end of President Trump’s time in office.

Cramer admitted it could happen “if it [the indictments and prosecution] looks like it’s purely politically motivated, but at the same time you can’t let an injustice go.”

“You can do it in a smart way by taking care of justice and at the same time win people over.”
