LISTEN: The Flag’s Scott Hennen’s conversation with Republican State Senator Jordan Rasmusson of Fergus Falls
MINNESOTA – Republican State Senator Jordan Rasmusson of Fergus Falls said he’ll push for legislation to create an independent office of the inspector general within state government during this year’s legislative session.
It would investigate and prosecute fraud in state government, programs and services.
“Unfortunately Governor Walz and legislative Democrats blocked that in becoming law last year,” Rasmusson said on “What’s On Your Mind?” on The Flag.
“The Governor has repeatedly said he is open to an OIG. The bill did not clear the House,” Walz’s Communications Director Claire Lancaster said in an email to Flag Family News in December 2025.
Rasmusson added the Legislature needs to make sure state agencies don’t get blank checks citing when DFLers controlled the Minnesota House, Senate and governor’s office in 2023 and 2024, they allowed state programs to be funded despite patterns of potential fraud.
“We need to have spending caps, spending triggers, that instigate audits of these programs so that if the program goes over the project costs, the legislative auditor will go in and figure out what’s going on,” Rasmusson explained.
