WASHINGTON – The Trump administration is being granted a pause on court orders regarding his executive order aimed at ending birthright citizenship for some.
In a six to three vote, the Supreme Court ruled universal injunctions “likely exceed the equitable authority that Congress has granted to federal courts.” The high court has allowed the Trump administration to narrow the scope of nationwide injunctions given by judges so they only apply to states, groups and people that sued.
The ruling was not on Trump’s executive order itself. It aims to limit automatic birthright citizenship to children who are born to at least one parent who is an American citizen or permanent U.S. resident.
Twenty-two states, including Minnesota have sued over the executive order.
