Tony Gehrig announces his campaign for Fargo City Commission

FARGO, N.D.  – In an announcement for his candidacy for Fargo City Commission, former Commissioner Tony Gehrig said his top priorities include balancing the budget, reducing debt, ending tax incentives and ending special assessments.

Gehrig served on the City Commission from 2015 to 2022.

“Platitudes will not fix the numerous and very serious problems facing our city. We need leaders who will speak specifically and plainly about the issues we have and the solutions they plan to implement,” Gehrig said.

He said the city of Fargo’s budget has risen by 5 to 11 plus percent every year for the past decade adding that’s unsustainable. Gehrig also said the city is $1.3 billion in debt.

Gehrig said he wants to end special assessments because he feels they represent the largest portion of the city’s debt.

“Specials for new developments should end immediately. This system is nothing but another subsidy for developers and realtors at the cost of every taxpayer. We can easily end specials tomorrow, if we have the proper leadership in city hall that isn’t beholden to special interest groups,” Gehrig said.
Gehrig will be on The Jay Thomas Show at 3:05 PM on Monday, February 2 to share more about his plans if elected.
