MOORHEAD, Minn. (Valley News Live) – A Moorhead resident is launching a petition demanding traffic safety improvements at what she calls a dangerous intersection.
Tammy Shannon-Sanden has lived blocks away from the intersection of 30th Avenue and 14th Street for 15 years. She said the area has become increasingly busy and dangerous, particularly with the presence of the Moorhead Schools transportation building.
“I’ve been around for like 15 years. It’s been crazy here even 15 years ago,” Shannon-Sanden said. “Now with the operation center for Moorhead schools here, Kwik Trip, it’s just growing in this area. It’s just awful here.”
The intersection sits in south Moorhead near the facility that houses transportation services for Moorhead Area Schools. S.G. Reinersten Elementary is located just blocks away.
Shannon-Sanden said she worries for children’s safety based on her own close calls.
“There’s many times when cars are constantly running the stop sign,” she said. “You know you can’t see a lot of the times if there’s cars pulling up to turn right you can’t even see them coming, it’s just a really busy area.”
She’s now creating a petition for stoplights at the intersection. She posted her plan to social media and received an overwhelming response from neighbors who support the need for more controlled traffic measures.
“I mean, I think this has been a long time coming and it’s needed in this area,” Shannon-Sanden said. “Hopefully, they’ll take notice and get something done.”
She said she is still in the early stages of the petition but has high hopes for its eventual outcome.
Valley News Live reached out to Moorhead Police for crash data at the intersection but has not yet received a response.
